It was late at night when the twins, Pogue, and I met in Pogue’s hut.

“Well?” said Ram, looking pointedly at us.

“It’s just as we thought,” said Pogue. “They are all changed. All of them, cold and different and determined to go do…something.”

Nail looked at me.

“It’s true,” I said. Tar forgot all about his plans to go home to Silverpeak.”

“They’re off to do dark things,” muttered Pogue. “They aren’t the people we knew. He has them under his control. This is why we need to escape. Hrain, are you with us?”

All eyes turned to me. “Yes,” I said quietly, although I still couldn’t reconcile Pogue’s villainous image of Drakmara with the old man who had taken me in. I thought of the last thing Drakmara had said to me, and wondered what secret he had that could ruin someone’s childhood.

Pogue glared at me. There’s no wiggle room on this, Hrain. You’re either with us, or you’re not. Make sure you pick the right side, when the time comes.
